Hi! I’m Susan Preston, founder of GeekAdonis, an image consulting and wardrobe styling service for men. I founded GeekAdonis five years ago for the sole purpose of ‘making smart guys look good’. GeekAdonis is based on the belief that developing your personal brand and a great visual resume will start you on the journey to be the best that you can be.
What if I told you that you could up your game at work and in social circles simply by improving your appearance? It’s true…research has shown that the image we present to others can affect how quickly we get promoted in our jobs and how we’re perceived in social situations.
I’ve been fortunate to work with clients who understood that they needed to dress better to feel good about themselves and to just have more confidence in their careers and in their relationships. It’s no secret that people react to how we look and how we present ourselves.
It all starts with wearing clothing that flatters you in fit and in color. Are you wearing your clothes too big? Too tight? Do you have a warm complexion and you’re wearing cool colors that are making you look pale and washed out?
We often make common mistakes in choosing the colors that we wear and this can happen because you simply find a color to be pleasing. Maybe you have it on your walls at home or a friend wore a shirt that color and you really, really loved it. But that doesn’t mean that color will work for YOU.
Maybe you’ve heard of the color craze from the eighties called ‘Color Me Beautiful.’ It was very trendy then to ‘have your colors done’. The reality is that we all fall somewhere within those seasonal colors: autumn, spring, winter and summer.
Warm skin tones thrive in the warmer colors of the spectrum like golds and browns, while cool skin tones with a bluish cast blossom in colors like jewel tones. You’ve probably had someone tell you that you look GREAT in a certain color which means that you were wearing a color that is on your particular color spectrum.
I can’t stress to you enough just how important it is to choose clothing that fits you well. Sometimes when men are carrying some extra weight, they tend to buy clothes that are too big for them. Wearing something that’s too big for you doesn’t hide extra weight; it accentuates it.
And gentlemen, sleeves and pants that are too long only succeed in making you look like you might have been snooping in your father’s closet. Don’t let your sleeves sneak way past your wrist bones and please, please don’t let your slacks or your jeans puddle up on your shoes.
Start to pay attention to the colors that you wear. Don’t let your clothing be so large or so tight that you attract the WRONG attention. Both colors and fit naturally lay the basic foundation for a dynamite wardrobe.
That’s all the time we have for today! Please stay tuned for future videos that will address improvements to your image that will put a smile on your face and a lift to your confidence! Until then, keep it stylish!
