One of the most fun parts about being an Image Consultant for men is that I get to talk to my clients about things they really don’t think about…like skin care for men. “Yes, of course I wash my face!” But using what type of product? And do you moisturize? And does that moisturizer contain an SPF of 15 or above? And what about at night…do you wash your face and then use a nighttime skin cream?
So many questions! I’ll cover the basics here to get you started. And I really, really hope that you’ll do a little research into what type of skin you have (dry? oily? blemishes?) and then get yourself into an effective skin care routine.
After you wake up and have the morning cup o’ joe, wash your face with a mild facial cleanser (no bar soaps please!). Then apply your moisturizer with SPF of 15 or higher. You can even invest in an eye cream that helps with undereye puffiness, dark circles and lines. Of course, if you’re going to be spending the day outside then by all means use a true sunscreen with broad spectrum SPF 30 to really protect your skin against the sun’s rays– sun exposure is the number one culprit for aging and wrinkled skin.
And at bedtime ‘take the day’ off by cleansing your skin of all the pollutants and other stuff that tend to accumulate on your face during the day (think: sweat). Use your mild facial cleanser and follow up with a specially formulated nighttime cream that contains some percentage of retinol. Just as sleep renews your body and spirit it also renews your skin so give it a fighting chance by cleansing and applying a product that will help it rejuvenate. You’ll be amazed at the difference in your skin when you greet the morning!
As with all things consumer, there are products that range from the big box store prices to some really pricey stuff online and at better department stores. It can be overwhelming and confusing! There are skin care products for men to fit most any budget. Nivea Skin Care for Men is a good choice and is available at Target and Walmart for a very reasonable price. Clinique and Jack Black are also excellent and you can get a helpful consultation for these products and skin care in general at one of the area department stores.
So go out there now and learn what we women have known for a long time: taking care of your skin results in a healthier, brighter complexion…people will notice and say, ‘wow, you look great!’ And who doesn’t want that?
