Skin Care for Men? YES!

One of the most fun parts about being an Image Consultant for men is that I get to talk to my clients about things they really don’t think about…like skin care for men. “Yes, of course I wash my face!” But using what type of product? And do you moisturize? And does that moisturizer contain an SPF of 15 or above? And what about at night…do you wash your face and then use a nighttime skin cream?

So many questions! I’ll cover the basics here to get you started. And I really, really hope that you’ll do a little research into what type of skin you have (dry? oily? blemishes?) and then get yourself into an effective skin care routine.

After you wake up and have the morning cup o’ joe, wash your face with a mild facial cleanser (no bar soaps please!). Then apply your moisturizer with SPF of 15 or higher. You can even invest in an eye cream that helps with undereye puffiness, dark circles and lines. Of course, if you’re going to be spending the day outside then by all means use a true sunscreen with broad spectrum SPF 30 to really protect your skin against the sun’s rays– sun exposure is the number one culprit for aging and wrinkled skin.

And at bedtime ‘take the day’ off by cleansing your skin of all the pollutants and other stuff that tend to accumulate on your face during the day (think: sweat). Use your mild facial cleanser and follow up with a specially formulated nighttime cream that contains some percentage of retinol. Just as sleep renews your body and spirit it also renews your skin so give it a fighting chance by cleansing and applying a product that will help it rejuvenate. You’ll be amazed at the difference in your skin when you greet the morning!

As with all things consumer, there are products that range from the big box store prices to some really pricey stuff online and at better department stores. It can be overwhelming and confusing! There are skin care products for men to fit most any budget. Nivea Skin Care for Men is a good choice and is available at Target and Walmart for a very reasonable price. Clinique and Jack Black are also excellent and you can get a helpful consultation for these products and skin care in general at one of the area department stores.

So go out there now and learn what we women have known for a long time: taking care of your skin results in a healthier, brighter complexion…people will notice and say, ‘wow, you look great!’ And who doesn’t want that?

Dress like you really mean it!

Geek Adonis Singapore Style

Hey everyone, I’ve been on a two-week hiatus, otherwise known as a dream trip to southeast Asia…which I highly recommend when you have an overwhelming desire to experience travel time of about 24 hours :). All kidding aside, I can definitely say that this part of the world has so much to offer: culture, geography, warm hospitable people and GREAT FOOD.

My first stop was in Singapore which led me quite naturally to this latest blog post! Singapore is a modern and bustling place, full of commerce, activity and a diverse population. The city-state is located very near the equator and so has a pretty temperate climate. There is much outdoor activity and nowhere is this more evident than down by the riverfront where many restaurants and shops are located.

I spent much of my time on the riverfront where the people-watching is at its best. I loved seeing people jogging, parents with strollers, and of course all the guys walking by in all manner of dress! And it didn’t take long for a pattern to emerge…

The men who were dressed in shirts and slacks which fit them well and were flattering in color strolled by with their heads held high…shoulders back, taking long, confident strides. Their self-confidence was palpable! And I’m pleased to say that there were plenty of them. By contrast, the men who wore more ill-fitting clothing more or less trudged along with shoulders slightly slumped, often looking down at the ground instead of straight ahead and making eye contact with others that they met.

I began to ponder the question: do the men who dress to enhance their appearance do so because they inherently know that it works? Or does the outfit itself help to provide that type of attractive self-confidence? Conversely, does an ill-fitting wardrobe mask a lack of self-confidence and so the wearer doesn’t want to attract attention and wants to remain unnoticed…and to project an image that is actually pretty negative about himself and quite possibly his outlook on life?

I’m certainly not a psychologist but I’ve been in this business long enough to understand that there are many factors that affect our choices regarding the image we present to the outside world. Our physical appearance is the first impression that others will form. Why not make it a positive one by focusing a little bit of time on how we look? I truly believe that we all feel better about ourselves when we take some time to make sure that the image we project is a bright and confident one!

Pretty soon this focusing time will become second nature and will automatically be built into your daily routine. What a great way to start the new year — by becoming a new you! Until next time…keep it stylish!

Top Three Questions I Get from New Clients

Welcome to my styling blog where you’ll learn lots of tips for putting your best image forward! Research has shown again and again that looking and feeling the best that you can be gives  you a significant advantage in every facet of life. And there’s no question that achieving a great image gives you a self-confidence that you may never have thought possible.

When I begin working with a new client I often get asked these three questions:

Can I afford this service?

The good news is that my clients actually SAVE money by working with me because I choose clothing that is guaranteed to flatter you in fit and in color. There will be no more buying clothing and accessories ‘just to have something to wear’. No more clothing languishing in your closet because you bought it on sale and didn’t really like it. Everything we purchase together will become a staple in your wardrobe and will be frequently worn. I also work within everyone’s budget so that means you’ll get the best quality and selections for your wardrobe budget.

Do we actually shop together or do you pick out clothes online for me to order?

We do shop together and I make it fun! I also make it easy for you. I select the clothing that I think is going to work well with your skin tone and color. This means you’re either a ‘cool’ skin tone or a ‘warm’ one. Maybe you’re even a hybrid! I’ll bring you the right colors into the dressing room for you to try…and in the right size for your build and body type.

What if you select something I don’t like?

My goal is for you to feel amazing in what you wear and also be comfortable. I will absolutely ask you to try colors and styles that  you may never have chosen for yourself! I have found that lots of guys fall into the habit of wearing the same types of clothing but can really use an update to their look. I never encourage you to buy something that you may just not feel comfortable in because comfort really is important to everyone.

Clothing and accessories should be fun for you to wear so keep your mind open to new possibilities!

Introduction to Geek Adonis Styling For Men

Hi! I’m Susan Preston, founder of GeekAdonis, an image consulting and wardrobe styling service for men. I founded GeekAdonis five years ago for the sole purpose of ‘making smart guys look good’. GeekAdonis is based on the belief that developing your personal brand and a great visual resume will start you on the journey to be the best that you can be.

What if I told you that you could up your game at work and in social circles simply by improving your appearance? It’s true…research has shown that the image we present to others can affect how quickly we get promoted in our jobs and how we’re perceived in social situations.

I’ve been fortunate to work with clients who understood that they needed to dress better to feel good about themselves and to just have more confidence in their careers and in their relationships. It’s no secret that people react to how we look and how we present ourselves.

It all starts with wearing clothing that flatters you in fit and in color. Are you wearing your clothes too big? Too tight? Do you have a warm complexion and you’re wearing cool colors that are making you look pale and washed out?

We often make common mistakes in choosing the colors that we wear and this can happen because you simply find a color to be pleasing. Maybe you have it on your walls at home or a friend wore a shirt that color and you really, really loved it. But that doesn’t mean that color will work for YOU.

Maybe you’ve heard of the color craze from the eighties called ‘Color Me Beautiful.’ It was very trendy then to ‘have your colors done’. The reality is that we all fall somewhere within those seasonal colors: autumn, spring, winter and summer.

Warm skin tones thrive in the warmer colors of the spectrum like golds and browns, while cool skin tones with a bluish cast blossom in colors like jewel tones. You’ve probably had someone tell you that you look GREAT in a certain color which means that you were wearing a color that is on your particular color spectrum.

I can’t stress to you enough just how important it is to choose clothing that fits you well. Sometimes when men are carrying some extra weight, they tend to buy clothes that are too big for them. Wearing something that’s too big for you doesn’t hide extra weight; it accentuates it.

And gentlemen, sleeves and pants that are too long only succeed in making you look like you might have been snooping in your father’s closet. Don’t let your sleeves sneak way past your wrist bones and please, please don’t let your slacks or your jeans puddle up on your shoes.

Start to pay attention to the colors that you wear.  Don’t let your clothing be so large or so tight that you attract the WRONG attention. Both colors and fit naturally lay the basic foundation for a dynamite wardrobe.

That’s all the time we have for today! Please stay tuned for future videos that will address improvements to your image that will put a smile on your face and a lift to your confidence! Until then, keep it stylish!
